We have been back at work & play in our beautiful "NEW" Ceramic Studio for just over a month now, and although it has been challenging (finding new places to put things, learning to navigate our remodeled space, etc.) it has also been quite wonderful. The photos below show a few of the wonderful moments of the last few weeks (including a new set of ceramics that were recently put on display in the Rossmoor Event Center - bottom center photo). The most recent CAC meeting (on April 12, 2022) was held in the Peacock Hall Theater. There we experienced a fascinating program hosted by Linda Mariano titled “Exploring Mixed Media.” Several CAC Members were interviewed by her and asked about their inspirations and processes as they created widely varied mixed-media pieces which included ceramic components.

Lots going on.. most recently, the first ever Rossmoor Earth Day celebration last Friday afternoon (April 15). We collected about 85 bowls of all different sizes and shapes, all of them made in our studio by our members, and sold them at prices ranging from $3 to $15. We had 10 different homemade soups (also from CAC members) and let the buyers of the bowls fill them with whatever type they wanted. There was even a batch of matzoh balls, as well as crackers, to go into the soup. People loved it! We sold all but 2 of the bowls and used up almost all of the soup. (People asked for the recipes, so I'm going to post them here -the first one that was sent to me is below, along with photos of the event.) This whole process is an Empty Bowls Project, and by the end we had raised $670 for the Contra Costa Food Bank. Oh yes - we also had a demonstration of pugging, which is how we recycle clay in the studio. Folks were very interested in that, and lots of clay was processed in the course of the afternoon. Pictures of that are below, too. Earlier this month we had a new display of CAC members' artwork installed in the Rossmoor Event Center (see the middle row of photos above - also the card showing the artists' names and titles of the work). And we had a lovely demo by Oakland potter Lynne Meade. Last but not least - our people have been very creative! (But that's not unusual.)
Below are some of our recent creations and the CAC members who've made them. Also shown: a group in the 1st session of the January Orientation class, observing Linda (the teacher) as she demonstrates the use of the slab-roller. Last but not least - the new display in the Event Center, where the top 6 niches showcase ceramic pieces created by our members. Last week the display at the Rossmoor Event Center was changed. Here are 2 views of the niches in the front foyer of the building as they are now. As you can see, CAC has 6 pieces displayed in the top two rows (the bottom row has photos from the Photography Club). [Note - you can always click on an image to see it larger!] Fred, one of our master potters, recently was commissioned by another Rossmoorian named Roger to make 6 mugs with faces on them. Here they are, the day Roger came by to pick them up (Fred is on the right). Obviously they were both quite pleased with the result!
When the Event Center opened late last year our club was able to display 5 ceramic pieces by our members in the group of 9 niches in the front foyer of the building. The photo on the left shows them - they are arranged in a "T" formation. When the display was changed in April, this time the CAC was allotted 6 spaces: the top 2 rows - this is shown in the right hand picture. (NOTE: to see a larger view of any picture just click on it.) Next week the Event Center display will be changed again - watch this space for more about that! But of course nothing is as good as seeing it in person, so be sure to stop by for a look when you are in the area! P.S. Any member of the CAC may submit up to three pieces to be considered for the Event Center display; an announcement to this effect is made 6 or more weeks before the selection process. The choice of which pieces are to be displayed is then made by an outside ceramic artist (not a CAC member).
